Tiergarten

Parks
Nr. 211 · Tiergarten

You would almost forget the mother of all Berlin parks. Maybe also because it, in contrast to the many other Volksparks (people’s parks) in town, doesn’t play a big role in the daily life of people. There are relatively few people who live around the park, and the eight-lane Straße des 17. Juni that is running straight through it isn’t very inviting as well.

But Tiergarten is so huge that you hardly even notice all these cars. The park breaths an English atmosphere, with multiple lakes and bridges. A walk through it is almost a must for Berlin visitors. Just don’t be surprised to see some nudity in summer, as Germans don’t really mind sunbathing naked. Apparently having sex in the Tiergarten bushes is also a popular hobby.

Tip: the statue in the centre of the park, better known as Siegessäule, Großer Stern and Goldelse, can be climbed for a small entrance fee. It gives you magnificent views over the town, better than from the cupola of the Reichstag.
