Tempelhofer Freiheit

What should we do with the vast space of the former Tempelhof city airport that closed in 2008? The city authorities didn’t really know, so as a temporary solution decided to open the gates. Thus Tempelhofer Freiheit in 2010 became a park where you can cycle, skate or take your kite on the former runways.

The temporary solution was a hit from day one, cherished by residents and tourists. That’s why the temporary became an indefinite solution: in a referendum the people voted against plans to build offices, apartment buildings and a library on the edges of the vast terrain.

That discussion is being reopened every couple of years, but it still is Berlin's favorite hangout on summer nights for sunset.
