Mauerpark

Parks
Nr. 005 · Prenzlauer Berg

Beautiful it ain’t, the Mauerpark. In fact it is a long green plain, with on one side a flea market (open only on Sunday), and on the other side a hill where the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn stadium is located.

This is where the wall ran, and after its fall this area became no man’s land. The locals hijacked the premises, with good intentions of course, and made the park into a bustling place midweek when it becomes a mixture of couples-in-love, joggers and homeless people.

On Sunday afternoon the Mauerpark is one big touristic theme park, especially when hundreds flock to the karaoke show in the amphitheatre and thousands walk through the flea market. On these days, the park can better be avoided if you like your peace of mind. In summer you can by the way spend your time in an excellent way in Mauersegler, a Biergarten on the Eberswalder Straße end of the park.

After an extensive renovation around 2020 the Sunday market at least has become better organized and the park runs all the way until the S-Bahn ring to the north. The Max Schmeling Halle, for concerts and sport events, is next door as well.
