Majestic, old theatre in the heart of the city. The Volksbühne has been preserved, not renovated: the brown interior from the DDR days still awaits you smiling when you enter the building. It’s the ‘no thrills, no spills’ concept of Ryanair: no unnecessary luxury, cheap tickets for the people, an ode to the workers movement which form the roots of the theatre .
The only luxury are the theatre plays, that are usually quite lavishly decorated and modern. The famous director and writer René Pollesch for example is one of the household names. In the big hall and in the adjacent Roter Salon and Grüner Salon are often great pop concerts.
