The home of Bertolt Brecht, Germany’s famous writer of plays. It’s a beautiful, classic theatre in the centre of town. The Berliner Ensemble opened in 1892 as Neues Theater (new theatre) with plays from another famous writer, Goethe. But after the war, which it left behind relatively undamaged, the glory years began with the Brecht plays.
After a renovation that took several years, the Berliner Ensemble is in decent shape again, though it is far away from the big and modern theatres in town. But Berliners cherish that as a quality: the main hall looks af it has been unchanged for decades, luxurious and lush in its decorations, brown in its colour.
